After several years of wear, the coatings on two of the famous tanks at the National Aquarium failed, allowing sea water to penetrate the concrete. The project specified a coatings system that was tricky due to the harsh application conditions. Polygon desiccant dehumidifiers were used to keep the dew point 20 degrees below the surface temperature while maintaining the tight curing schedule. Polygon’s custom drying solution created the specified conditions to ensure that the project was a success.
A four million gallon Helix Water District water storage tank was scheduled to have an old coating of lead-based paint removed from its roof and support structure. The advent of summer also threatened to cause dangerously high temperatures inside the tank, creating worker safety concerns. Polygon’s hybrid dehumidifiers, which combine desiccant technology with integrated cooling, maintained optimal temperatures for safety regulations while holding the blast. The contractor also realized $4000 weekly in energy savings as compared to using their own non-integrated equipment.
Because Houston Fuel Oil needed to meet a deadline to store incoming crude oil, the challenge for the painting contractor was to complete two tanks within 28 days, versus a normal 60-day schedule. This demanding schedule had to be met during a cool, rainy period, which was likely to create condensation on the work surface of the tank. Polygon experts suggested utilizing propane gas-fired desiccant dehumidifiers , which are effective in removal of high levels of moisture at high rates of airflow. An added advantage in this situation was the ability to utilize the heat, a natural byproduct of the process, to boost the cure rate of the coating. With Polygon’s system in place, the contractor said that his company met the deadline and saved money in the process.
