While most people will be dreaming of a white Christmas, some unfortunate souls will end up facing the nightmare reality of a wet Christmas. Whether caused by a leaking tap or frozen pipework, water damage can cause huge disruption to property owners when it hits. And this disruption is amplified at this time of year when our homes keep us warm, dry and sheltered from the worst of the cold weather.
There are many causes of moisture damage and there are a variety of drying methods that can be chosen to return materials to their pre-incident condition. Polygon Norway has recently introduced Vacuum Drying, which involves establishing negative pressure under affected fabrics. This draws the water and moist air out of the materials. Vacuum Drying is a targeted method which means that only the affected area needs to be treated.
Back in 2015-2017, Polygon’s indoor air researchers identified issues in Vääksy, a co-educational property, owned by the municipality of Asikkala, in Finland. Indoor air and structural surveys, conducted by Polygon at the time, identified conditions that would suggest there was an indoor air problem in the premises.
As a result of Hurricane Ida this fall, the Central Chabad Library in Brooklyn, New York, experienced severe water damage. The lower level of the library flooded, causing damage to approximately 5,000 seforim and books. The quick action and skills of the Polygon US team ensured that the affected artifacts could be restored.
