Do you want to proceed?
How do you cope with and optimally deal with severe water damage? Theoretical knowledge is all well and good. But to be an excellent property damage restoration technician you need hands-on experience. You have to practise regularly under realistic and controlled conditions. Just like firefighters have to train all the time to be able to do their job efficiently when severe emergencies occur. This has always been a gruelling challenge for the entire damage control industry.
Last year, The Polygon Drying Academy - a new training facility for simulation of water damage was opened by the Polygon organisation in the UK. The facility is extremely advanced and is putting Polygon ahead of the competition.
The training unit consists of three different rooms. Each is built using different materials in the walls, floors and ceilings – concrete, tile, plastic, wood, vinyl and several types of insulation covering 90 percent of the most common materials. Water damage can be simulated in many different ways. And it is possible to carry out separate tests simultaneously in the different rooms.
In the basic exercise, a room is drenched with 1,000 litres of water. This corresponds to the volume that normally flows out from a real leak during one hour. After 24 hours the Polygon technicians are called in. They have access to all types of drying equipment and must make the best possible choice, which is not always obvious or easy.
To begin with, the facility has been used to train British technicians. But since sharing of best practice is standard inside the global Polygon organisation, colleagues from other countries – as well as customers – will also be able to hone their skills in this unique “water damage laboratory.”
