A large paper manufacturing facility in Quebec has been dedicated to producing high-quality paper rolls used across the region. The cardboard cores used for winding these rolls must remain dimensionally stable to support reliable production and consistent product performance.
When fluctuating humidity levels began affecting storage conditions, the facility started experiencing recurring issues with core swelling and shrinkage. These variations led to handling difficulties, concerns over roll deformation, and operational inefficiencies that risked disrupting production. Plant managers quickly sought an effective solution to stabilize conditions and protect product quality.
Elevated and inconsistent moisture levels inside the warehouse were causing the cardboard cores to expand during humid periods and contract when conditions became drier. This repeated movement made the cores difficult to handle and increased the risk of deformities when winding paper rolls.
Environmental data confirmed the situation. Interior humidity was closely mirroring outdoor conditions, with relative humidity and absolute moisture content shifting throughout the day. Since cardboard is highly sensitive to moisture, these fluctuations directly contributed to recurring quality issues and workflow interruptions.
Ventilation adjustments were not enough to counter the moisture entering the building. Although a desiccant dehumidification system had been recommended, the client chose to install a smaller unit than what engineering analysis suggested. Once in operation, it became clear that the equipment was undersized for the actual moisture load. Warehouse conditions remained unstable, and the dimensional issues with the cores continued.
The facility needed a dependable solution that could fully decouple indoor humidity from outdoor weather and restore consistent storage conditions.
To resolve the ongoing humidity issues, Polygon installed an HCU-9000 electric desiccant dehumidifier. Once installed, the improvement was immediate. The dehumidifier reduced moisture levels throughout the warehouse, stabilizing both relative humidity and moisture content. This broke the cycle of expansion and contraction, affecting the cardboard cores.
The system is operated through a remote Smart Controller, without interrupting production or requiring manual on-site adjustments. With the proper equipment in place, the warehouse environment returned to a predictable and well-controlled state that supported smooth production and consistent product handling.

Stabilized dimensions: The upgraded system maintained steady humidity levels, ensuring cardboard cores remained dimensionally consistent throughout storage.
Improved product quality: With dimensional changes eliminated, issues related to roll integrity and handling were resolved, reducing the risk of defects.
Reliable warehouse conditions: The storage environment is now steady and predictable, supported by real-time environmental data and continuous monitoring.
