Case Studies – Remote Monitoring and Control, Temporary Climate Solutions

Smart Solutions for a Safer and More Efficient Hospital Modernization

As part of an extensive modernization and technical upgrade of patient wards at the largest hospital in Stockholm, Polygon has been entrusted with ensuring a controlled and moisture-safe environment throughout the construction process.

Challenge

Buildings 17 and 18, originally built in 1944, require significant renovations to meet modern healthcare standards, including enhanced fire protection, upgraded water and sewage systems, improved ventilation, and optimized climate control. The project encompasses approximately 26,000 sqm and will provide 168 new single-patient rooms, aligning with current patient care requirements.

With the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including Locum as the developer and Arcona as the main contractor, ensuring a seamless construction process while managing complex environmental factors is crucial. Polygon’s expertise in moisture control, climate monitoring, and remediation is key to safeguarding the project’s success.

Solution

Polygon provides a comprehensive package of services to support the modernization, including:

  • Moisture safety in production: Implementing advanced moisture control measures to prevent potential structural issues.
  • Climate control for drying: Creating stable indoor conditions to optimize drying processes.
  • Construction heating: Maintaining consistent temperatures to facilitate efficient workflow and material integrity.
  • Monitoring of climate and drying using sensors: Utilizing digital technology for real-time tracking and risk mitigation.
  • Asbestos remediation: Safe removal of hazardous materials in accordance with strict environmental regulations.

To establish a controlled environment, Polygon initiated the project with an in-depth moisture assessment of the premises, evaluating the drying requirements of both existing structures and newly installed materials. Advanced dehumidification systems were deployed to ensure proper drying of newly installed flooring, which plays a crucial role in meeting acoustic and safety requirements.

A network of digital sensors was embedded in the floors on each level of the buildings, continuously monitoring relative humidity and temperature. These sensors provide real-time data, allowing for proactive adjustments to optimize drying efficiency. Remote monitoring capabilities ensure that construction teams can track conditions without disruptions, reducing the risk of unforeseen delays.

Additionally, 28 construction heaters were strategically placed throughout the buildings, providing waterborne and electric heating solutions to maintain optimal temperature levels. With a total output of 16,500 cubic meters of dehumidified air per hour, Polygon guarantees that both new and existing materials retain their integrity, supporting a durable and high-quality final result.

As part of the asbestos remediation efforts, specialized Polygon technicians were brought in to safely remove contaminated sealants from ventilation ducts. The remediation process was carried out in strict compliance with occupational safety and environmental guidelines, ensuring safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Benefits

  • Optimized Drying Conditions: Ensured strict construction requirements were met while minimizing material risks, contributing to a high-quality and durable final structure.

  • Proactive Risk Management: Utilized real-time monitoring and digital tracking to detect and address potential issues early, reducing moisture-related complications and preventing project delays.

  • Enhanced Safety & Compliance: Maintained a hazard-free work environment through controlled asbestos removal and strict adherence to environmental and health standards.

Managing a project of this scale requires careful coordination between multiple teams, and Polygon’s expertise in digital monitoring and climate control has been instrumental in ensuring smooth execution. By integrating state-of-the-art technology and precision engineering, we contribute to a sustainable and efficient hospital modernization that prioritizes patient safety, operational efficiency, and long-term structural integrity.
