When disaster struck at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, it seemed like a horrendous rainstorm had engulfed the facility. A burst water line flooded the hospital's file storage area and approximately 800,000 crucial x-ray images were in jeopardy. In the face of this challenging situation, hospital staff called on Polygon to preserve and recover the damaged materials.
A one-of-a-kind collection of older records was kept in the New Orleans Notarial Archives Research Center, some dating to the 1700s. Many fragile and crucial records, most of which were on linen, were jeopardized by wind-driven rain that passed through windows shattered by Hurricane Katrina.
After an appraiser was asked to evaluate the American Bible Society’s Rare Book Collection, he came to an alarming discovery — an active mold outbreak was attacking more than 1,100 irreplaceable volumes. Located in New York City, the Library is the largest collection of Bibles in North America, with 4,700 volumes, which includes rare bibles dating back to the 13th century. More than 300 languages are represented in the Rare Book Collection, including early printed Bibles and a small collection of manuscripts.
