Mountain View Elementary School in Colorado’s Windsor School District experienced over $100,000 in water damage over the Thanksgiving holiday. The disaster caused the school to close its doors for three days to make sure the facility was safe for students before it re-opened its doors.

Only days after a burst pipe flooded the Old City Hall building in Tacoma, WA with over 30,000 gallons of water, a neighboring historic downtown building on Pacific Avenue suffered the same fate. The building is home to United Way of Pierce County offices.

The cold weather months are some of the wettest of the year. Consequently, the extra humidity creates the perfect environment for mold to grow in a home. While your works of art, photographs, antiques and family heirlooms may have the protection of the roof in your home, they may be susceptible to mold damage if you do not display or store them properly.

According to CNN, there are as many as 700 water main breaks in the U.S. on a daily basis. The cause of these breaks is due to an aging water delivery infrastructure where up to 30 percent of water pipes are 40 to 80 years old. Many of the aging water lines lie beneath homes and businesses, and their ruptures result in massive property loss and public health threats.

Librarians started work on February 16, 2011 only to discover a major leak flowing from the ceiling of the Carrier Library’s special collections room, which contains historical documents, manuscripts and archived records, along with other special collections. Although the cause of the leak is still unknown, librarians were able to salvage or preserve all of the water-damaged documents from the Virginia library.
