Recovering from a flood can be an overwhelming experience, and knowing the right steps to take afterwards can feel daunting. While every flood event is unique, we've compiled some basic information to help guide you through the initial days of recovery.
If you suspect your home is flooded, your personal safety must be the primary concern. Immediately assess the situation and determine if immediate evacuation is necessary. Stay informed of the latest developments by monitoring your local radio and TV, or by calling the dedicated Floodline service on 0345 988 1188 (for the Environment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and Natural Resources Wales) or 0300 2000 100 (for Northern Ireland).
Crucially, do not take any action that could endanger your or others' health and safety; always follow official advice to leave your home as soon as possible. If you feel in imminent danger from rising floodwater at any point, call 999 immediately.
Before entering, check the building for signs of damage. Do not approach any structure that appears unsafe, deep standing water, or fast-flowing water. If you can enter the property, DO NOT turn on your electricity until a qualified electrician or utility company has checked the system, and be aware of fallen power lines. Turn off the gas supply to any appliances that have been flooded.
Floodwater is often contaminated, especially by sewage. Contamination remains even after the water recedes, so follow simple procedures:
Wear rubber boots and gloves in and around the affected property.
Wash all cuts and cover them with waterproof plasters. Seek medical advice for puncture wounds to determine if a tetanus booster is necessary.
Small children, pregnant women, and people with health problems should avoid flooded areas until the clean-up is complete.
If you feel unwell or accidentally ingest contaminated water/mud, consult your doctor immediately.
When you can safely enter the property, it is crucial to focus on documentation and communicating with your insurer:
Insurance & Claim Number: Contact your insurance company and ensure you write down your official policy claim number.
Photography is Key: Take extensive photos of everything that is damaged, including furniture, carpets, possessions, and external damage. Also, capture a photo of the tide mark on the wall, showing the maximum height the flood water reached.
Do Not Dispose of Items: Be careful not to throw damaged items into a skip before your loss adjuster has inspected them. Always check with your insurer first before disposing of any items, as they need to assess the financial loss and document damaged content.
Utility Readings: Take an electricity meter reading (If possible). This is important because the cost of electricity used for repair equipment (like dehumidifiers) can often be covered by your insurance policy.
Record Everything: Grab a notepad and pen. You will be speaking to many people (insurers, adjusters, builders), so record names, numbers, and the details of conversations to maintain a clear log of the claim process.
Skips: If you are insured, skips will typically be provided by your insurance company as part of the reinstatement project. If you are uninsured, skips may sometimes be provided by your local council, but this is at their discretion.
