Whether you're in a high-risk area or just want peace of mind, this checklist covers essential steps to prepare your home for potential flooding.

Assess Your Risk

Check your risk level using official flood maps:

Make a Flood Plan

  • Identify emergency contacts (family, neighbours, local council)

  • Plan evacuation routes and a safe meeting point

  • Prepare a grab bag (medications, documents, phone charger, cash)

  • Save key numbers (insurance, utilities, plumber, etc.)

  • Store important documents in waterproof wallets or digitally

Install Flood Protection Measures

  • Fit flood barriers or flood boards on doors and windows.

  • Seal air bricks with covers or self-closing units.

  • Install a sump pump in the basement (if applicable)

  • Use non-return valves on drains and toilets to prevent backflow.

  • Keep sandbags or alternative barriers ready (water-activated bags, etc.)

Renovate with Flood Resistance in Mind

  • Use water-resistant materials (e.g. tiled floors, plastic skirting boards)

  • Elevate electrical sockets and fuse boxes.

  • Move boilers and appliances above the flood level.

  • Store valuables and electronics on upper floors
