Case studies – Leak Detection

Rodent-Damaged Pipes Repaired After Leaks

The homeowner had contacted us previously due to leaks throughout the top of the house; in total of 4 leaks were found. The conclusion was that rodents were chewing the plastic piping, which caused the issue in the top area of the house. During the initial visit, the leaks were located, stopped, and repaired. Several months later, the homeowner called us out again after having to turn the heating off for a couple of months due to leaks in the downstairs areas of the house.

The Process

On inspection, it was clear the rodents were back to their old tricks, but with access to the downstairs pipes. The main issue was that when the heating was on, a large leak was coming through the kitchen ceiling and onto the light fittings, making it quite dangerous for the family. The technician searched using state-of-the-art detection equipment to locate the leak areas and found several leaks within the kitchen.

The Solution

A large section of piping was removed by a highly trained Leak Detection Technician, which was chewed in several areas. This was replaced, and the technician ensured that no further leaks either on the top floor or downstairs were taking place. It was agreed that the homeowner should look to have all plastic pipes changed to copper, which would stop any rodent chewing through and maybe a call to a pest control company.

The Outcome

After two lots of leaks and several months of having the heating turned off because of the danger with the light fittings, the homeowner quite rightly was exhausted with the situation. The Leak Detection Technician on both occasions identified the leaks, replaced the damaged pipes, and put the house back in good condition. His advice will help the homeowner going forward and help ensure those pesky rats find their meals elsewhere.
