How to Keep Your Home Safe While You Soak Up the Sun This Summer

The season of BBQs, beach trips, and much-needed holidays. Whether you're jetting off to a tropical paradise or road-tripping through the countryside, the last thing you want is to spend your getaway worrying about what’s going on back home.

Here’s the good news: with a few smart moves, you can protect your home from break-ins, water leaks, and even fire hazards. Let’s dive into some top tips to make sure your property stays safe and sound while you’re away.

🕵️‍♂️ 1. Outsmart Burglars with Tech and Tricks

Install Security Cameras:
Smart security cameras are your eyes while you’re away. With motion alerts and live feeds sent straight to your phone, you can keep tabs on your home from anywhere. Bonus points if they come with two-way audio to startle anyone sneaky!

Use Smart Lighting:
Program lights to turn on and off at random times to create the illusion that someone is home. Combine that with a TV simulator and a motion-activated outside light, and you'll throw off even the nosiest would-be intruder.

Don’t Broadcast Your Holiday:
As tempting as it is to post that perfect beach photo, wait until you’re back to share. Social media oversharing is an open invitation for burglars.

🔐 2. Lock it Down—Literally

Check All Entry Points:
Before you leave, double-check that all windows and doors are securely locked, including those often forgotten like garage doors, garden sheds, and upstairs windows.

Upgrade Your Locks:
Consider deadbolts or smart locks with remote access. If you have sliding doors, use a security bar or wooden dowel to prevent them from being forced open.

💧 3. Avoid Turning Your Home into a Swimming Pool

Inspect for Leaks:
A small drip can turn into a major mess. Check taps, toilet valves, and under-sink pipes for any signs of leaks. If you're gone for more than a few days, consider shutting off the main water supply.

Use a Water Leak Sensor:
Smart sensors placed near your washing machine, dishwasher, or water heater will alert you the moment moisture is detected, before it becomes a mini indoor lake.

Polygon Leak Prevention

Clear Your Gutters:
Blocked gutters can overflow during summer storms, leading to water damage and mould. A quick clean-out before you leave can save you a soggy welcome home.

🔥 4. Don’t Spark a Fire (Literally)

Unplug Non-Essential Appliances:
Not only does this save energy, but it also reduces the risk of electrical fires. Think toasters, coffee makers, gaming consoles, anything you won't be using while you're away.

Check Smoke Alarms:
Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries. A quick test could save your property in case of an emergency.

Keep the Stove Off (Seriously):
Sounds obvious, but double-check! Ensure the oven, stove, and other heat-generating appliances are turned off and cool before you head out.

🌿 5. Keep Up Appearances

Ask a Friend or Neighbour for Help:
Have someone pick up your post, water your plants, and maybe even pop in a few times. A cared-for home is far less likely to be targeted than one that looks abandoned.

Pause Deliveries:
Put your mail and newspaper on hold or use a mail-holding service. Nothing screams “we’re not home” like an overflowing letterbox.

Maintain the Garden:
If you’ll be gone a while, arrange for someone to mow the lawn or water the garden. Tall grass and droopy plants are red flags that no one's around.

Wishing you a lovely holiday this summer!
