KAEFER Prestwick Airport Oil Tank

Glasgow Prestwick is Scotland's fifth-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic, although it is the largest in terms of land area. Passenger traffic peaked at 2.4 million in 2007 following a decade of rapid growth, driven in part by the boom in low-cost carriers, particularly Ryanair, which used the airport as an operating base.

The Problem

The Petrochemical tanks were sited inside a zoned bund area, meaning any equipment placed inside the bund needed to be ATEX certified. Polygon worked with the client and, after calculating temperature, humidity and airflow requirements, our specialist technicians identified the size of the non-ATEX units which could be sited further away and outside the bund area, but still deliver the correct conditioned air to the tank. This allows the client to complete their surface preparation and paint application works on time and on budget. The client also required the ambient air condition inside the tank to be recordable during the coating application work.

The Process

Polygon's state-of-the-art desiccant dehumidification systems were utilised after the initial survey to deeply dry the ambient air to ensure that the moisture level in the tank was low enough to reduce corrosion growth and allow paint to be applied to the newly treated surface area of the tank.

The site also required power and fuel management to allow 24/7 running. Polygon provided this with a full 24/7 engineer call-out regime in place. We also fully backed up all of the equipment operation, measuring our processed air supply for both humidity levels and temperature, incorporating our remote monitoring exact air system.

This system allowed the site operator to monitor conditions inside the tank and the system via tank sensors monitored on a 24/7 basis and because the Polygon engineers could set alarm thresholds for when supplied air went out with the required remit, our client could be confident that supply air was correct for their application from project start to project end.

The Solution

Thanks to the comprehensive planning and preparation work, Polygon was able to install all equipment on time and within budget. The delivered set-up ensured ideal ambient air conditions were maintained 24 hours a day for the project duration, enabling the contractors to complete the required blasting and recoating works on time and within budget on behalf of their client.

The Outcome

Due to comprehensive planning and preparation work, Polygon were able to install all equipment on time and within budget. The delivered set-up ensured ideal ambient air conditions were maintained 24 hours a day for the project duration, enabling the contractors to complete the required blasting and recoating works on time on behalf of their client.
