Case studies – Reconstruction

Restoring a Church to its Former Glory

One of our most exciting projects for our Polygon Reconstruction division was the full refurbishment of an 1860 Grade 2 listed building – St John’s church in Sheffield. There’s nothing more important to us than leaving behind a lasting legacy in the communities we serve. This three-year project certainly achieved that.

Challenge

Lying empty for some time, the church needed an array of work. Structural surveys proved that the building was unsafe as it was suffering from severe subsidence and dry rot.

Solution

After detailed negotiations with English Heritage and the local Listings Officer, our Reconstruction team undertook a vast amount of work, including the underpinning and stitching of the original walls. We repaired the roof with fibreglass after the lead was stolen from the property. Installed Velux windows and laid down a concrete floor. The Team insulated and plastered the church ceiling. And finally, renewed the heating system, reinstated the old radiators, cleaned and repaired the original stained glass windows  - in addition to getting new oak windows designed and fitted.

Our specialist team prides itself on striking the perfect balance between respecting building traditions and exploiting new technology - so they remain at the forefront of the sector.

Outcome

Polygon is proud to say it’s now a 21st-century office housing a dedicated team of surveyors, estimators, technical and IT support, accounts and administrative employees.
