In recent years, fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have increased dramatically. In London alone, incidents involving these batteries jumped from 183 fires in 2023 to 467 fires in 2024, a trend fuelled largely by e-scooters and e-bikes. Tragically, in 2023, 11 lives were lost to these fast-spreading, highly dangerous fires.

Why Lithium-Ion Battery Fires Are So Devastating

Lithium-ion battery fires are exceptionally devastating due to several unique factors. They generate extreme heat, with temperatures often exceeding 1000°C, leading to extensive structural damage. The flames also spread with speed, making immediate containment a critical challenge.

A significant danger lies in the toxic fumes released, which contain hazardous chemicals that pose severe health risks to everyone involved, from building occupants to emergency responders and restoration crews.

These fires are notoriously hard to extinguish, as they often don't respond to traditional firefighting methods, requiring specialised techniques for safe control and elimination. Finally, there's a persistent risk of reignition; even after a fire appears to be out, it can flare up again days later, creating a continued and unpredictable threat to the property and its inhabitants.

How We do It

Our restoration process begins with comprehensive decontamination. We use Class H vacuums with safety filters to safely remove hazardous dust and particulate matter. This is followed by a detailed surface wiping using fresh cloths, soapy water, and clean water. For chemical treatment, we apply alkaline soaps like Polygon FW 102 to neutralise any contaminants left behind by the fire.

Safety Assurance

Safety is our top priority. Our staff uses specialised protective gear, including hydrofluoric acid-resistant boots, to manage unique chemical hazards. Following decontamination, we perform rigorous testing and verification to ensure the space is completely safe for re-entry, giving you total peace of mind.

The Hidden Costs

Recent studies show that the average fire claim involving lithium batteries is around £50,000, with some incidents reaching much higher figures. Quick and thorough restoration is not only essential for safety but also crucial for reducing long-term costs.
