Quick response saves vital documents

When critical documents are affected by an escape of water, rapid response is vital. The movement of moisture through files and boxes increases the level of primary damage, and, if the incident is left untreated, mould growth, ink migration and distortion can occur. To minimise the cost, complexity and length of time taken to rectify the damage, the documents should be identified, extracted and stabilised as soon as possible.

Reconstruction

St John’s Church Sheffield

One of our most exciting projects for our Polygon Reconstruction division was the full refurbishment of an 1860 Grade 2 listed building – St John’s church in Sheffield. There’s nothing more important to us than leaving behind a lasting legacy in the communities we serve. This three-year project certainly achieved that.

Efficient Climate Control for Winter Tank Refurbishment

Due to tank dimensions equal to 22,911 m2 and the project running through the middle of winter, this was a large-scale project. Site location and terrain, although beautiful, were difficult to get to, and installation of our equipment on a reasonable lay-down area to ensure proper delivery of the processed and heated air to the tank presented its challenges. Our Technicians worked hard and managed to site the equipment in an accessible area and close enough to the target area for the processed air not to be affected by lengthy ducting distances.

Keeping bound volumes and archival collections free from dust contamination is a crucial part of any preservation strategy. Not only can such dust present a danger to health by triggering allergies or sensitising staff and users, but if conditions are suitable, accumulated dust can allow the germination and growth of mould spores on the substrate, and attract insect pests.

Custodians of libraries and archives prepare for emergency incidents that threaten their collections, both through writing emergency plans and training colleagues in their implementation, because they recognise the need to preserve collections through rapid response. Early incident control will limit the number of books and boxes that are affected by the peril and the severity of water penetration. Preparation in advance also ensures that a salvage operation can be established quickly, ensuring that affected objects are recovered and stabilised before secondary damage, such as mould growth, can take hold.
