Polygon provides the correct environmental conditions to enable water tank repair

When a water tank has a capacity of more than 4,000 cubic litres, maintaining its structural integrity is a key priority. Fail to do so and there is the potential for significant water damage and costly repairs. When looking to maintain an underground water tank of this scale at a rural site, the structural engineering contractor engaged Polygon’s specialist help to ensure very specific environmental parameters were met.

Dumfries Ice Bowl

Curling may still be considered a niche sport, but its popularity has grown significantly, particularly following its prominent role in the 2022 Winter Olympics. The Dumfries Ice Bowl in Scotland, which proudly welcomed Team GB’s medal-winning curlers home from Beijing, regularly hosts elite-level events such as the Scottish and English Curling Championships. For competitions of this calibre, the quality of the ice is critical. Even slight fluctuations in temperature or humidity can compromise the playing surface, leading to melting or crystallisation that can affect gameplay.

Calton Road Rail Bridge

Originally built in 1896, the Calton Road rail bridge plays a vital role in Edinburgh’s transport network, carrying trains in and out of Waverley Station—one of Scotland’s busiest rail hubs. In January 2022, Network Rail launched a £1.7 million refurbishment project to repair and re-paint the bridge, protecting the structure from long-term weathering. A critical part of this work was ensuring the paint application met stringent quality standards, as any failure in the finish due to poor environmental conditions would require a costly and disruptive rework, especially problematic in such a high-traffic city centre location.

Leak Detection

Colne Girls Football Club

A customer reported an unusually high-water bill, which led to the confirmation of a leak on the cold-water supply pipe running between the external water meter and the internal stopcock in the kitchen—a distance of approximately 100 metres. The leak was causing a loss of around 2,880 litres of water every 24 hours.

Climate Success at Braemar Lodge Bridge

Braemar Lodge Hotel is located deep within Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park, near the royal Balmoral Estate. On the grounds sits a steel road bridge that crosses Clunie Water, a tributary of the River Dee. Due to its exposure to harsh weather, the bridge undergoes regular maintenance to protect it from corrosion. This process includes abrasive blasting of the surface, followed by repainting, both of which must occur under tightly controlled atmospheric conditions to ensure the integrity and durability of the protective coating.
